How to convert HEIC to JPG on a Chromebook
ChromeOS may preview an HEIC in one app while another site or editor rejects it. Use the browser to create a real JPG copy, verify the download, and keep the HEIC original instead of merely changing its filename.

Why an iPhone photo behaves inconsistently on ChromeOS
A Chromebook can encounter the same HEIC through Files, Google Photos, Drive, a school portal, or a browser editor. Each surface can have different decoding and upload support.
Files shows a generic icon or no useful preview
The file can be complete even when the local viewer cannot render its HEIC encoding. A missing thumbnail is not proof that the photo is damaged.
Google Photos displays it but another site rejects it
A cloud photo service can decode HEIC for its own preview while a classroom, CMS, or editor accepts only JPG or PNG. Preview support does not convert the file stored in Downloads.
The converted file seems to disappear
Chrome normally saves the result in Downloads unless its download location was changed. The source may remain in Drive or Google Photos while the new JPG is a separate local file.
A renamed file still fails
Changing IMG_1234.heic to IMG_1234.jpg changes the label only. A destination that inspects the image bytes still sees HEIC data.

ChromeOS apps do not share one universal HEIC decoder
HEIC is a container commonly used by iPhone cameras. JPG stores image data differently, so creating a compatible copy requires decoding the HEIC and writing new JPEG data.
Chrome, Files, Google Photos, Drive, and third-party web apps are separate products. One can generate a preview without giving every other app permission or code to read the original format.
The site processes supported files inside the current browser. The JPG is a lossy, metadata-free delivery copy; the original HEIC remains the better archive for future editing or another export.

Make the HEIC available in Files
If the photo is only in Drive or another cloud service, download it fully first. Confirm that it has a nonzero size and ends in .heic or .heif.

Open the browser converter
In a current Chrome session, open the HEIC to JPG tool. No extension, account, or desktop application is required for the supported browser-local workflow.

Convert one file first
Choose one HEIC no larger than 50 MB and let the tab finish. For a large set, prove the workflow with one representative photo before using the batch converter.

Find the new JPG in Downloads
Open the ChromeOS Files app and select Downloads, or use Chrome’s download history. Keep the new filename distinct from the source so you do not upload the HEIC by mistake.

Open and use the JPG
Check orientation, crop, color, and detail, then choose that JPG in the destination. If it is rejected, check the destination’s separate size and dimension rules.

Retain the HEIC master
The JPG is lossy and this conversion does not preserve EXIF. Keep the original in Photos, Drive, or another archive if metadata or maximum source quality matters.

Can a Chromebook open HEIC files without conversion?
Some ChromeOS or web-app combinations can preview HEIC, but support varies. Convert a copy to JPG when the receiving editor, form, or recipient requires a broadly compatible file.
Does Google Photos turn the original into JPG when it previews it?
Not necessarily. A service can display a generated preview while retaining the original HEIC. Check the extension of the file you actually download or submit.
Where does the converted JPG go?
Chrome normally places it in the Downloads folder shown in the Files app, unless you changed the download location or chose a destination when prompted.
Is Chromebook conversion free and private?
Supported conversion is free and unlimited, with no daily cap. Files up to 50 MB each are processed in the browser rather than uploaded to this site.
Will the JPG preserve EXIF and original quality?
No. JPG is a lossy re-encode and this workflow does not preserve EXIF metadata. Keep the HEIC original as the archive copy.
