What to do when HEIC to JPG conversion loses metadata
The visible photo and its metadata are separate. This browser converter writes a JPG from decoded pixels and does not copy HEIC EXIF, GPS, or camera fields. Keep the original HEIC, decide whether the delivery copy needs metadata, and use a metadata-aware export when preservation is required.
Recognize what is missing
Missing metadata can look like a changed date, place, or camera record
A JPG may look correct while photo software sorts it incorrectly or shows blank information fields. First identify which value is absent and whether you need it for personal organization, evidence, publishing, or privacy.
The capture date becomes the conversion date
File managers often show the new JPG creation time when the original EXIF capture timestamp is absent. That does not mean the photo was taken on the conversion date; it means the derivative file no longer carries the earlier embedded value.
The map location disappears
GPS coordinates are optional EXIF data. A pixel-only re-encode can omit them entirely, which is useful for public sharing but wrong when a private archive, inspection, or field record depends on the original location.
Camera and exposure details are blank
Device model, lens, ISO, shutter speed, and exposure fields are not visible pixels. Photo catalog and editing software cannot display those values if the conversion workflow never copied them into the JPG.
The photo library order changes after import
Some library apps fall back to file creation or modification time when DateTimeOriginal is missing. A group of converted JPGs can therefore appear at the day of conversion instead of the day they were photographed.
Pixels are not metadata
Image pixels and EXIF records travel through different parts of an export
HEIC can contain the visible image plus descriptive fields such as capture time, device information, orientation, and sometimes GPS. JPEG can also store EXIF, but the destination format merely allows metadata; it does not guarantee that a converter will transfer it.
This site performs supported HEIC conversion locally in the browser. It decodes the visible pixels and re-encodes them as a lossy JPG without copying EXIF metadata. That behavior avoids carrying hidden location and device details into the output, but it means the JPG should not replace an original whose metadata matters.
Metadata that was never copied cannot be reliably reconstructed from the JPG. The original HEIC, Apple Photos library, iCloud copy, or a prior backup is the authoritative place to recover exact capture information.

Stop treating the JPG as the only copy
Keep or recover the original HEIC before doing anything else. Do not replace archive files with converted JPGs when dates, GPS, camera settings, edits, or maximum image quality may matter later.

List the fields the next workflow actually needs
A public marketplace photo rarely needs GPS, while an inspection archive may need capture time and location. Decide whether the output is for sharing, editing, cataloging, evidence, or long-term storage before selecting a conversion method.

Use this converter only when metadata-free output is acceptable
For a compatibility or privacy copy, select an HEIC up to 50 MB and create the JPG in the browser. Expect a lossy JPEG containing the rendered image without the original EXIF fields. Open it and confirm the visible result before sharing.

Use a metadata-aware export when fields must survive
Export from a trusted photo application that explicitly offers metadata or location options, then inspect the resulting JPG in a metadata viewer. Do not infer preservation from the filename or from the picture looking unchanged.

Correct library dates from the original record if necessary
If you still have the HEIC, read its capture date and update the derivative inside your photo-management app. Keep a note of the correction. Avoid inventing a timestamp when the original record is unavailable or the date has evidentiary importance.

Verify before archiving or publishing
Check both the visible image and the metadata fields you intended to keep or remove. Then store the HEIC master separately from the JPG delivery copy so a later sync or cleanup does not erase the only complete record.

Does this HEIC to JPG converter preserve EXIF?
No. It re-encodes the visible image in your browser and does not copy EXIF, GPS, or camera metadata to the JPG. Keep the original HEIC if any of those fields matter.
Can I restore the original date from the converted JPG?
Only if another reliable source still contains it, such as the HEIC, Apple Photos library, iCloud record, or backup. A JPG creation time usually records when the derivative was made, not when the scene was photographed.
Is missing GPS data a problem or a privacy benefit?
It depends on the purpose. Removing GPS is helpful for public sharing, but losing it can damage a private travel catalog, inspection record, or research workflow. Make that decision deliberately and preserve the HEIC master.
Does JPG support metadata at all?
Yes. JPEG files can contain EXIF and other metadata, but a converter must explicitly copy or write those fields. Support in the format does not mean every export preserves them.
Does browser-local processing change the metadata result?
Local processing means the selected file is not uploaded to this site for conversion. It does not automatically preserve metadata. In this workflow, supported files up to 50 MB are processed locally and exported as lossy, metadata-free JPG copies.
