What is an HEIC file?
HEIC is the filename extension commonly used by Apple for still images stored in the High Efficiency Image File Format, or HEIF. A container format describes how image data and related information are packaged. In many iPhone HEIC files, the visible picture is compressed using technology from the HEVC family.
That distinction explains why a device can recognize the .heic name but still fail to display the photo: it needs support for both the container and the encoded image inside. It also explains why changing the filename to .jpg is not a conversion. JPEG and HEIC store their image data differently, so an app must decode one format and write a new file in the other.

Why iPhone uses HEIC
Apple introduced HEIF and HEVC capture support with iOS 11-era devices and software. The practical goal is efficient storage without forcing the camera system to stay tied to formats designed decades earlier. High Efficiency capture lets Apple’s photo pipeline package modern image data in a compact form while retaining the information its own Photos ecosystem expects.
For someone who edits and shares mostly through current Apple devices, that efficiency is usually invisible. Photos, iCloud Photos, AirDrop, Messages, and recent Mac software understand the format or can negotiate a compatible version during sharing. The friction appears when an original file reaches a destination with incomplete HEIF or HEVC support.
It is a deliberate modern capture format. Convert it when a destination needs JPG; keep the source when you want the original file for your library.
High Efficiency versus Most Compatible
In iPhone Camera settings, High Efficiency favors HEIF for photos and HEVC for supported video modes. Most Compatible uses older, more widely recognized formats such as JPEG for new photos and H.264 for new videos. Some advanced capture modes or device features may still have their own format requirements, so treat this as the default for ordinary new captures rather than a retroactive library conversion.

If your daily workflow depends on Windows software, web portals, older editing tools, or recipients who repeatedly cannot open HEIC, changing the camera default can remove a conversion step. On an iPhone that supports HEIF capture, use this path:

How to convert existing HEIC photos
The Camera format choice only affects new captures. For an existing file, you need to export or convert a copy. On a Mac, Photos and Preview can export an image as JPEG or PNG. Some iPhone sharing paths may automatically provide a more compatible version when the receiving destination needs one. Results vary by sharing method, destination, and settings, so confirm the received filename before relying on that behavior for an important workflow.
A browser converter is useful when you are already at a Windows, Chromebook, Linux, or shared workstation and need a predictable JPG. Select the HEIC files, let the browser decode them locally, and download the new files. Keep the original names organized and retain the HEIC sources until you verify the JPG copies.

Modern Android versions and many current gallery apps can decode HEIC, but support depends on the device manufacturer, OS version, and specific app. Messaging services may also transcode an image in transit. Use JPG for a recipient whose device and software you cannot test.
Web publishing and upload forms
A browser’s ability to display an image does not override a website’s upload rules. The server may accept only extensions such as JPG, JPEG, or PNG, and a content management system may not generate HEIC thumbnails. Check the accepted-file note beside the upload control. When HEIC is not listed, convert before uploading instead of repeatedly renaming or retrying the same file.
